Why your product gets zero traffic after launch

You shipped. You posted the "it's live" tweet. You refreshed Google Analytics every hour for two days. Nothing happened. Not zero because of a bug. Just zero.

This is not a failure of your product. It is a misunderstanding about what "launching" actually means from the search engine's perspective. Here is what is happening and why it is normal.

The three reasons new sites get no traffic

1. Google does not know you exist yet

Submitting a sitemap tells Google your site exists, but it does not mean Google trusts it. There is a buffer period — sometimes called the sandbox — where a new domain is treated as unproven. During this time, Google shows your pages for a few long-tail queries, watches how users interact, and decides whether to rank you higher. This is not malicious. It is the same mechanism that stops spam from ranking on day one.

My own site, product-visibility.vercel.app, was submitted to Search Console on June 9. Four days later I got exactly one impression at position 83 for the query "product visibility". No clicks. That is the sandbox at work: the index knows the page exists, but it is not yet willing to show it to anyone who might click.

2. Nobody links to you

Backlinks remain the strongest ranking signal for competitive queries. A new site has zero of them. Without links, Google has no external signal to confirm your site is useful. You can have perfect technical SEO and still not rank, because technical SEO only gets you indexed. Links get you ranked.

This is the hard part for solo founders: you cannot fix it by tweaking meta tags. You need other sites to mention you, which takes either time or a deliberate distribution effort.

3. Your content is thinner than you think

Most product pages are under 500 words. That is fine for conversion — a landing page should be concise. But search engines rank pages partly on how thoroughly they cover a topic. If your page is the only page on your domain, and it only says "here is my product, sign up", Google has very little evidence that your site is a useful answer to any question.

Adding a single page of substantive content — a blog post, a guide, a use-case page — doubles the surface area Google can match to queries. It also gives you a chance to rank for informational searches that lead people to your product.

What product visibility actually means

Most founders measure visibility as "Google Analytics sessions". That is one data point and not the most useful one two weeks after launch. Visibility, in practice, is a set of yes/no questions:

If most of those answers are "no", you do not have a traffic problem. You have a discoverability problem. Traffic is the outcome. Discoverability is what you build.

The honest answer is: most of the work is slow and unglamorous. But a few things make a real difference in the first month:

Zero traffic after launch is not a signal that your product is bad. It is a signal that distribution is hard, which is true for almost every new thing. The question is not "why is nobody coming?" but "where am I invisible and what is the fastest thing I can fix?"
